REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING

Climate Survey

Council received information on the Climate Action Survey conducted by the Peachland Climate Action Task Force (PCATF) in the Fall to understand the community’s views on climate change and actions residents and the District may take to prepare. PCATF received 320 surveys but excluded 63 from non-Peachland residents. A large majority of respondents agreed that human-caused climate change is real and support both personal and District actions to help reduce our climate pollution and prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Secondary Dwelling Policy Update

Council agreed to defer amendments to the District’s Secondary Dwelling Policy DEV-188 for staff to incorporate Council’s comments into changes to the policy. It had been introduced to consider adding residential flex units and update decommissioning and enforcement standards. Flex units, unlike secondary suites, are not permitted to be used as short-term rentals and are intended to provide flexible options to support family members or as a “mortgage helper.” Staff will bring forward the new draft at an upcoming meeting.

Mayor’s Minister Meetings

Mayor Patrick Van Minsel provided a report on his recent meetings with BC’s provincial ministries earlier this month. Between March 31 and April 3, Mayor and Councillor Dave Collins attended Victoria, BC after securing meetings with ministers or staff from eight different provincial ministries. The hot topic for Peachland’s delegation was funding for new sewer infrastructure for the community. Now that Peachland has a Sewer Master Plan, an impediment in the past to secure funding, Peachland is hopeful funding may be secured through partnerships with the Provincial and Federal governments.
